This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars

A lightsaber is a weapon from the Star Wars miliei. It consists of a metal handle or hilt containing a power cell and emits a beam of energy. The Jedi, and their enemies, the Sith, use their mastery of the Force to perform amazing feats, handily defeating opponents wielding blasters and multiple foes at once.

Because of their powerful foresight and special training, Jedi are able to deflect attacks with their lightsabers, even blaster fire. Jedi knights learn to even reflect blaster bolts back at their attackers.

Lightsabers in role-playing gamesEdit

In the original Star Wars:The Roleplaying Game by West End Games. the lightsaber had its own, unique weapon skill. It did 5D damage, comprable to a heaby blaster pistol, but could do far more in the hands of a Jedi.

In the d20 version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, the weapon was given a damage die code of 2d8, double to the damage of an ordinary weapon. Though it did slightly less damage than a blaster, it could ignore DR and hardness. In the Star Wars Saga Edition role-playing game, DR is less common and prominent. However, as with previous versions of the game, Jedi skill made the lightsaber extremely effective.

Lightsabers in the moviesEdit

Lightsabers are very powerful, capable of severing metal and melting dense objects. However, the blades are not all-powerful. On screen, we see lightsaber strikes deflect off Darth Vader's armor and graze or bounce off objects. In Star Wars:Revenge of the Sith, Yoda's lightsaber impales a stormtrooper and remains suspended in his body until Yoda retrieves it, showing the lightsaber requires some kind of applied force to cut through things.

The movies suggest lightsabers are similar in deadliness to blaster fire. With the exception of Luke and Leia, virtually everyone struck by a blaster dies. Many combatants survive blows by lightsabers, although lightsabers also dispatched Qui-Gon Jin, Darth Maul, and Obi-Wan Kenobi with single strokes.

Design of the lightsaberEdit

Originally, lightsabers were going to be commonplace weapons in the Star Wars movies. However, George Lucas decided to instead restrict the weapon to the Jedi, giving them a more archaic, mystical feel.

The original lightsabers were built around the handles for hand-held lighting units, and the glowing blades were rotoscoped.
